![]() ![]() Writer Mike Noonan leads an uneventful but happy life in Derry. Using Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca'' as inspiration, King spins a tale of Gothic horror and romance, set in his familiar stomping grounds of upper Maine. In fact, "Bag of Bones'' is the finest he's written. Like "Misery,'' "The Shining,'' "The Dead Zone,'' "Pet Sematary,'' "Dolores Claiborne'' and "The Green Mile,'' this will become one of his classics. So when I sat down to read and review King's latest (his first with Scribner after his former publisher, Viking, turned down King's request for a record $17 million), I approached it with trepidation. ![]() He's used them so frequently his novels grew as tedious as the B-movie horror flicks he professes to love. Always adept at narrative, King has, in later years, been prone to overusing the techniques of building suspense. ![]() The problem hasn't been with the stories so much as the execution. In some cases - "Eyes of the Dragon,'' "Needful Things'' - I couldn't push hard enough. 27 - Since around 1988 (with three exceptions), I've found it necessary to push myself into finishing Stephen King's novels. ![]()
